Stress is the byproduct of leading busy, multi-tasking lives in a fast-paced technological world. As a nation, we’re angrier and more stressed out than ever. Stress is a major cause of many of our illnesses and ailments, from hypertension and heart disease, to headaches and back problems. With all of us experiencing some degree of daily stress or anger, it’s no wonder that mental, emotional and physical strain is ever-present in the workplace. In fact, stress on the job is becoming an epidemic.

More than $300 billon—$7,500 per employee—is spent each year on stress and anger-related compensation. Stress related ailments account for 75-90% of doctor visits, according to recent statistics. Workplace stress is the primary cause of reduced productivity, absenteeism and rising workman’s compensation costs. Besides creating a potentially poisonous workplace environment, stress and anger eats away at a company’s bottom line, diverting funds from more important priorities.

The Stress & Anger Management Institute (S.A.M.I.) has just announced a new workshop for business executives on how to manage and deal with stress and anger in the workplace. The 10-hour program of 90-minute workshops is tailored for executives at the management level, giving them the communication tools essential for combating stress.

S.A.M.I., a leader in the field of stress and anger management, has taken its time-tested methods and now applied them to executive management. In today’s global economy, the corporate workplace is made up of employees from all different cultures and backgrounds, each with their own personality. Creating and maintaining a positive work environment and high morale is becoming more and more challenging. S.A.M.I.’s new program concentrates on increasing emotional intelligence and managing stress to increase productivity. The goal is to provide tools for effective communication and to eliminate the distraction of misunderstandings, while emphasizing personal accountability.

Starting with pre-assessments that measure a participant’s current ability to communicate effectively, show empathy, and manage stress, the weekly, on-site, group sessions include exercises on social dynamics, as well as behavioral strategies, all targeted to the workplace environment. Some of the topics covered are:

• Clarifying exactly what stress and anger is and how can we manage it

• Understanding the roots of anger

• Expressing anger appropriately

• Letting go of anger

• Improving self-awareness to enable individuals to see the way others perceive them

• Learning to identify emotions and the impact they have on others

• Resolving conflict in a positive manner

• Promoting collaboration, partnership and teamwork to increase productivity

• Improving assertive communication skills.

The most successful executives and leaders are those who can communicate effectively and are perceptive enough to recognize their employees’ talents as well as their weaknesses. This is why Emotional Intelligence has become more than just a catch phrase. S.A.M.I. is a leader in this growing field, helping people to recognize anger and stress, and then providing the tools to manage them.

More and more companies and CEOs are taking advantage of executive coaching, recognizing the ROI reported in Fortune Magazine: “Asked for a conservative estimate of the monetary payoff from the coaching they got, these managers described an average return of more than $100,000, or six times what the coaching had cost their companies” (from “Executive Coaching—With Returns a CFO Could Love”).

Stress will always be with us in some form. It’s how we handle the stress that will determine our mental, emotional and financial well-being.

1. Prejudice/bias. Organizational strife is sometimes traced to “personalities.” This is one person differing with another based simply on how he or she feels about that person.

2. Nastiness/stubbornness. Some individuals go through life with a chip on their shoulders and seem to search for combatants.

3. Sensitivity/hurt. This occurs when a person, because of low self-esteem, insecurity, or conflict in his or her life, easily feels attacked by criticism or other interpersonal directness.

4. Differences in perception/values. Most Conflict Results from the varying ways different people view the world. These in-congruent views are traceable to differences in upbringing, culture, race, experience, education, occupation, socioeconomic class, and other environmental factors.

5. Differences over facts. A fact is a piece of data that can be quantified or an event that can be documented.Arguments over facts typically need to last very long since they are verifiable. But a statement like, “It’s a fact that you are insensitive to my feelings,” is neither documentable, and so is actually a difference in perception.

6. Differences over goals /priorities. An argument about whether a bank should focus more resources on international banking or on community banking is a disagreement over goals. Another example would be whether or not to increase the amount of advanced professional training given to tellers.

7. Differences over method. Two sides may have similar goals but disagree on how to achieve them. For example, how should advanced teller training be conducted?

8.Competition, for scarce resources. Two managers might argue over who has the greater need for an assistant, whose budget should be in-creased more, or how to allocate recently purchased computers.

9. Competition for supremacy. This occurs when one person seeks to outdo or out-shine another person. You might see it when two employees compete for a promotion or for comparative power in your organization.

10. Misunderstanding . The majority of what looks like interpersonal conflict is actually communication breakdown. Communication, if not attended to with care, is as likely to fail as to succeed. And when it does, a listener’s unwarranted inferences about a speaker’s intent often create interpersonal conflict.

11. Unfulfilled expectations. Many of the causes listed above contribute to one personal not fulfilling the expectations of another. Unfulfilled expectations are the ultimate cause of divorce, firings, and other forms of relationship breakdown. The major reason that expectations go unfulfilled is that they are unreasonable, inappropriate, too numerous, and unstated.

From the daily, regular stress that comes from living in our highly active culture to specific life events that knock us for a loop, the impact of stress accumulates. Recognizing our stress “triggers” is a critical first step in reducing stress and anger. The following are daily ways to help you maintain balance or get back to well-being.

Do something physical. Exercise, walk, play a game, or garden.

Breathe. Deep breathing , especially when you find yourself irritable or angry, will help you learn to activate, balance, release and recover from an angry or stressful situation.

Retreat. Find a place – your sanctuary, your bedroom, a park bench, your place of worship — where you can be quiet and restful. Go there as often as you need to.

Watch what you eat. Drink water, eat fruits and vegetables. Be aware of any “emotional eating” habits you may have under stress. Stay away from alcohol, fatty foods, and caffeine, when possible.

Get it out. Talk to trusted friends or a counselor. Keep a stress and anger log. Use the formula for assertive communication. (Contact S.A.M.I. for a copy of our “Assertive Formula”)

Learn to say no. Care for yourself first or you’ll have nothing to work with when others need your help.

Laugh/smile. It’s impossible to stay sad or upset with a happy grin on your face. Let go, let God.

Change. Alter your beliefs, people you spend time with, locations, jobs, or activities.

Relax. Take a nap, bath, or shower. Take a “healthy time out” (no less than 20 minutes yet no more than 60 minutes). Get a massage. Do absolutely nothing

Have some fun. Remember to take some time to play, be creative, and do things that serve your life purpose.

With the uncertainty of an unstable economy causing a great deal of stress and anxiety, not only in our personal lives, but also placing a strain on our wallets, Americans are looking for as much relief as possible. Men and women across the nation have been laid off and forced to make drastic changes in their lives. Since the winter of 2008, many studies and surveys have found that both stress and irritation have peaked when economic news has been at its worst. Levels of stress and anger have only continued to rise since then.

In response, S.A.M.I. Learning Centers has introduced their “Any Day, Any Time” anger management program. The program offers affordable anger management classes for only $37 per class. Each class is conveniently offered online. In addition, couples may also opt-in to an individual, one-on-one anger management class for only $47.

S.A.M.I. offers anger management for men and women who are interested in or who need to learn how to deal with their stress and anger in a more positive, functional way. The “Any Day, Any Time” program offers an alternative to traditional therapy for individuals who are ready to take control of their lives for the better. To schedule an appointment call 800-520-8867.

“Anger management is a skill that can be learned, with education that considers an individuals’ unique set of circumstances. I have found that S.A.M.I. students quickly learn many productive ways of being fully self-expressed in both their personal and professional lives. The tools and training our students receive allow them to rapidly heighten their quality of life,” says Anutza Bellissimo, CAMF, President of S.A.M.I. Learning Center; an extension of the Stress & Anger Management Institute.

The Institute focuses on gaging the individuals current ability to manage emotions and stress in life, in order to increase productivity. The goal is to eliminate the distraction of misunderstandings, provide the tools for effective communications and emphasize personal accountability.

A conservative study estimates that at least one-third of all lost work days are due to workplace stress, with roughly $33 billion per year in lost business productivity. For every dollar spent in workers compensation, there are ‘hidden’ or indirect costs of about $4.” Since October 2005, “Anger Awareness Month” has helped individuals develop an understanding of, and accountability for, their personal patterns in managing stress, assertive communication, anger, and emotional literacy.

It was developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1957 as a way of developing the mind so that a person can rise above, or “transcend”, beyond the noise and stress of daily life. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a student of the famous Hindu Guru, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. From 1958 onwards, he travelled the world teaching his spiritual regeneration and enlightenment.

Transcendental meditation had its beginnings in the Far East and then spread to the western world. After three years of travelling and teaching, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi realized that he needed to train his followers so that they could spread this form of meditation even further.

The first international training course was held in Rishikesh, India in 1961. As more and more people all over the world realized the benefits of this form of meditation, scientists began researching it and by 1970 the first scientific papers were published espousing the technique. Since then there have been hundreds of such documents published, all of which show that transcendental meditation:

• helps to reduce the stress levels in the body leading to overall good health
• helps to increase a person’s creativity
• helps to heighten the intelligence level of the meditator
• brings about self-realization
• could actually help you to live longer

Transcendental meditation does not have any religious affiliation, but it did have a political association in the Natural Law Party. This political party was formed in 1992 with the goal of using the principles of the meditation as a way of finding ways to solve the problems of society – crime, injustice, economics and environmental issues.

Basic transcendental meditation courses are generally expensive and in spite of the high cost, an estimated five million people all over the world have taken these courses. There are also advanced courses available for extra costs. This process of meditation is relatively easy to learn in the seven-step procedure used in the four days of the course. Each day begins with a two hour lecture and the instruction starts with a ceremony performed by the instructor after which the students learn the technique and start practicing.

The principle behind the technique of transcendental meditation is that the source of all thoughts is the deepest level of the subconscious and is far beyond what the normal senses can experience. In this meditation, the practitioner takes one thought or sound and focuses on this so that it can be experienced in the deepest possible way.

The Maharishi compared it to a bubble of water that starts deep in the water and is only visible when it reaches the surface. He said that our thoughts are the same way – they start in the subconscious and rise to the conscious level of the mind.

In January, 2008, the Maharishi retired as the chairman of the transcendental meditation organization. He passed away the following month in Vlodrop, Netherlands, where he had lived for almost 20 years, coordinating his centers of teaching through an organization known as the Global Country of World Peace.

S.A.M.I. Learning Centers has introduced a new “Healing Rhythms” program that helps students be attentive to their inner and outer surroundings as a means to control stress and anger. The program helps students analyze just how sensitive and powerful thoughts and emotions can be.

While we may more easily accept the idea that physical pain can have emotional repercussions, the reverse is also true; emotional disturbances, can, and most likely will, have an impact on our physical state. S.A.M.I.’s “Healing Rhythms” program includes meditation, biofeedback events, and breath work. The lessons in this program will show students a range of different ways to strengthen their mind/ body connection-and thus, their overall health and well-being.

The simple act of being aware of one’s breath or energy level on a daily basis can have a considerable impact on how one thinks, feels and acts, especially when each day they are put in highly stressful situations. Releasing tension doesn’t happen all at once-it is a gradual process, just as it takes a long time for the body to accumulate the different layers of tension and stress. Meditation consists of quieting the mind so that students can discover and re-experience the eternal quiet and deep wisdom within them. The average person lives a busy life, filled with so much sound, movement, and activity that meditation is essential to help go within the distractions and stress so that students may reconnect with their authentic character.

Students will also learn how to use breath work as a tool to overcome their stress and anger. By engaging in even just a few minutes of conscious breathing, students can help undo and even prevent the negative effects that stress can have on their health. Biofeedback technology uses sophisticated electronic equipment to measure and monitor changes in internal physiological states. The measurements offer insight into what is going on energetically in the body, and provide a platform on which students can make positive changes to their mental, physical and emotional states. The technology allows students to explore the powerful effects that breathing and meditation can have on their mind and body as they begin to let go of physical and mental stress. It is very important for individuals to learn how to deal with anger and stress and realize how the two can affect their everyday lives

Biofeedback and meditation can be helpful to counter the effects of negative thoughts by cultivating positive emotions. Unless someone works in the kind of job that puts them on the front lines of real physical danger every day, chances are they are relatively “safe” in the office, home, or school. But still, the stress of interactions, work, and business politics can elicit a damaging negative reaction, which is why it is so important to gain control of the mind and body at the same time. No matter where the stress originates, whether at home, the office, or in school, if it goes unaddressed, the body takes a serious hit and the result can be anything from mild aches and pains to inflammations and disease.

For more information on S.A.M.I.
